The night before the presentation has come upon us! Everything has been mounted and I have been reciting the script which I am to read. I made sure that all of my fabric samples etc were in order and that everything was properly mounted because I understand how important presentation is.
I must also work on my appearance – I want to go into the classroom looking like the Missguided character, therefore I must wear the Tshirt that I have had printed, I must also ensure that I wear the hair ribbons and nail polish to ensure I look as ‘in keeping’ with the Missguided theme as possible. I must make sure I arrive in plenty of time for my timeslot.
I understand that this is done alphabetically, and as I am near the end of the register, I will not be presenting my work until later on in the day. I must ensure I leave in plenty of time and that I carry my work over in a way that it won’t get ruined or damaged. I will now continue to read through my script, making sure I know exactly what I am supposed to be saying.
I am very nervous as I type this, but I am sure that I will be ready for tomorrow after a good night’s sleep!

Development of the Missguided character
Hitherto, throughout the development of the Missguided character, I have kept things very simple. The Missguided character would comprise of a peace sign, a heart, and a triangle – representing the female sign on toilets etc.
However, I have also considered a Christmas Missguided, which saw the character with a pair of wings, perhaps being used as a Christmas tree decoration.
I then began to think that I could create a sequence of these seasonal character to suggest how the Missguided character could be altered slightly throughout the year, to best represent the time of the year. For example, I created a Missguided character for the following occasions:

- Valentine’s Day
- Easter
- Mother’s Day
- Halloween
- Christmas
- New Year
These worked very well, particularly those with the wings. I must therefore consider whether this angelic Missguided character could be a permanent fixture. For this reason it may be necessary to create a focus group.
What next?
I must research into creating a focus group to best obtain the results that I desire.
Creating a handout to coincide with the presentation
Today I have considered working on a script and creating a handout for the Missguided team, to help enhance my presentation. I must consider the best possible way of learning this script.
I have considered creating a PowerPoint slide initially, to help me learn this, where I can visually and orally learn the presentation, however this may become confusing when trying to recite the presentation in the absence of the PowerPoint.
I must think of a creative way of presenting the handout – a simple A4 document would not be the best way to convey the creativity surrounding my design and the character itself.
Furthermore, what information should this handout contain? It would not be necessary to include information concerning the company, as the Missguided people are present, consequently the information must focus solely on my designs and the logic behind it.
What next?
I must start to write the basic script to the presentation.

Considering changing the colour scheme
It came to my attention that the current colour scheme that I had looked at for Missguided, was perhaps not quirky enough for the target consumer, based on what I know the customer desires, from research.
I therefore went back to the drawing board as such and started to rework this concept. I consider ways that I could develop both the character and the colour scheme further, bringing it to life more, rather than have a 2D character.
I then began to consider the layout of my final ideas. I had to work on the idea of white space and acquiring the perfect balance between overcrowded and a rather empty looking page.
Further experimentation must begin into the use of the translucent paper. I have purchased this in different colours – not just the red shade I have experimented with. I decided that this red paper did not enable the Missguided figure to stand out enough, therefore the white or green option may work better in this instance.
What next?
The main focus is quite a drastic change – reworking the colour palette. At present my design looks slightly too juvenile for the company.
I must go back to my initial research into trends and start looking into this. I must then consider creating a trend packet / trend box which will allow me demonstrate my trend concept to the panel.

Further considering ways to enhance the presentation
I have looked onto the internet about cheap printing for Tshirts. Vista Print was considered a reliable source, and I have used the company before for previous briefs, therefore I will feel confident in using the service again this time.
http://www.vistaprint.co.uk/t-shirts/gallery.aspx?pg=6&num_req_imgs=0&arr_id=0&rd=2
On first visiting the site, I am welcomed by many possibilities, including tshirts with different length sleeves, and the opportunity for fonts, logos and photographs to be included, both of the front, and the reverse.
I desire to look most like the Missguided character; therefore I will wear the white t shirt as a dress. I am certain that I would like the Missguided character to be shown on the front of the tshirt, however I am not yet sure which message (or maybe a metamessage) I will include on the back of the tshirt (for example, choose me)!!!
On looking at the site, there is also the option to get a bag printed. This could be an excellent way of seeing what the product would actually look like in situ. Therefore this is something for me to consider, it would be a useful prop when presenting, and a lovely addition.
I have also considered how to justify my actions, therefore I may decide to present the questionnaire results on an A3 board, or maybe A2 board, so that I have something to back up my discussion when talking to the class.
I must research more into terminology, for example discussing what each aspect of my design will feel like, look like and the purpose of it. I wish to rehearse this presentation over and over again until I have absolutely perfected it, so that nothing fazes me when I am stood up there.

Considering how to present my ideas
Since the last blog update I have had a tutorial with course leaders. This made me consider how exactly I am going to present my ideas to the class, and of course the Missguided team.
It is above all important to remain professional. However I understand that when being up there, put on the spot, it will be easy to lose my way. Therefore I must plan for this very well!
I have consider ways in which I can enhance my presentation, including:

I have consider ways in which I can enhance my presentation, including:
- Getting a Tshirt manufactured of the Missguided character, to include the Missguided logo possibly.
- Having cue cards, which would contain bullet pointed information. These would have the Missguided figure on the back of them.
- Presenting my work on neatly mounted A3 boards, with my name on the front of each board, and possibly the Missguided logo in the corner. Any trend boards should also be presented in this form.
- I will dress like the Missguided character. This has given me further inspiration to develop this character, possibly including different colours, a hair ribbon, coloured legs (representing tights), and shoes.
What next?
I must research into the above, to see what is viable, and what I may struggle with.

Creating the 'think green' story board
Today I expected with creating a narrative sequence for the Missguided brochure. For this I decided to go along with the green theme.
I introduced the Missguided character and a narrative whereby she uses a plastic bag to go shopping into town, purchasing food as well as clothes (as researched through the questionnaire).
The narrative sequence concludes with the Missguided character designing the Missguided bag for life. This ends with the Missguided website.
This has been put into the brochure, so that the reader is directed to the website, increasing footfall and therefore intensifying the likelihood of sales.
What next?
Next I must work out what to include in the rest of the leaflet content, which information to include when considering the intended purpose.

Creating a 'think green' mood board
Since the last blog entry I have been trying to achieve a more realistic effect with the swing tags, making them look more authentic. This has involved reducing the transparency on top layers, and adding a gradient over the swing tag shape. The result of this successfully made the swing tag look more viable, and realistic once placed onto a garment.
I also worked on enhancing my research through creating different boards. I created a style advisor board which revolved around the narrative sequence of the misguided character. The style advisor would recommend different options to go with certain items, as seen on the denim trend focussed swing tag.
The other board I created was for the recycling ideas, I demonstrated Missguided to be a completely environmentally friendly company. I used the symbol of the people holding hands around the globe, but instead just repeated the ‘miss’ guided character around the globe, the outcome was very effective, and I then changed the contents of the globe to clothing items, in the green shade, this represented the environmentally friendly and reusable aspect. I then used blue for the sea, selecting the exact shade as explored throughout the initial mood board created.
These boards help me to establish a clear line of thinking, and provided a point of reference.
What next?
I must continue to look expand my research whilst developing my concepts.

Creating the trend focussed swing tag option
Creating the trend focussed swing tag option.
I used Google images to locate an image of lace. I then used Illustrator to live trace this. Once I had done this I used the live paint option to select the outline and changed this blue, in keeping with the colour way of the trend. This blue option also linked to part of the trend which was electric and bright.
After I had completed this, I used the peace symbol for the corner of the swing tag for the hole, and demonstrated that a black thread would be used to secure this, which would be attached using a safety pin.
I then placed the modified ‘Missguided’ logo in the centre of the swing tag. With regards to the back of the swing tag, I used a sticker which would contain the product code, product price and the size of the item, alongside the Missguided figure.
I then found a lace type garment from the Missguided website, and live traced this to make it look slightly more timeless. I then showed what the swing tag would look like in situ, and placed it as if it was attached to the sewn in garment label.
I then experimented with the denim trend. I created a swing tag option using a sample of denim that I located from the internet, and live traced this using the colour 6 option.
The front of this showed the horizontally positioned Missguided logo and also the Miss guided figure. The back of the swing tag would use a jaggedly cut-out sticker (in keeping with the distorted and destructed effect) which would contain a sort of style advisor set up. It used the Miss guided figure to recommend combinations to wear with the item. The details of the original product would be placed inside a sketched template of the item.
What next?
I must continue research and development. I must also look at other online retailers to see how they package and send out items, for example competitors such as Asos.

Development of the Missguided Tote bag and brochure
I began to implement the concept of the ‘Miss’guided into the booklet and bag designs. For the booklet I considered an option where the booklet opened from the front, splitting the ‘miss’ guided figure in half. I then tried to implement this same notion into the bag for life.
Initially I considered having the ‘miss’ guided logo positioned in the centre of the bag for life. The bag for life would be an organic cotton fabric and could be produced in one of the four colour ways: red, orange, blue and green. It could also be produced in a more sophisticated black.
From this I considered different handle concepts, for example plastic and metal chain. I also considered different bases and incorporating two of the colour ways into the bag design. The most successful bag thus far was one which would have the wording printed: ‘Every day is a fashion show and the world is your runway…’. This had the ‘miss’ guided figure attached as an add on, which the wearer could then take off and place any where they desired – perhaps encouraging yet another form of promotion.
The peace logo was incorporated into this, as the bag fastening was a button (most likely in the blue shade) and secured by a loop fastening. This was a landscape bag which looked very much like a hand bag except it would be in a thin polyester fabric most likely.
The ultimate bag experimented with was also very successful. It showed four of the misguided characters across the face of the bag (the back would be blank). This presented each of the different colours in the theme, therefore showcasing this as part of the brand identity.
What next?
I must continue with this experimentation in all areas of the POS development, having started development in each sector I must draw conclusions, assessing what works in order to establish a direction to move forwards into. I must also look at creating a trend focussed swing tag.

Designing the generic swing tag
I began to create the generic swing tag, using the mood board as the basis for concept generation. I used Illustrator and initially drew a basic template, based on the size I had decided to be the best for use after analysis.
The swing tag was basic, in keeping with the simplistic style that Missguided go for; it would not be viable to create something really flamboyant if this does not represent the corporate identity of Missguided. The swing tag was black in colour, in keeping with the Missguided website, and business card. This was portrait and had the Missguided figure on it.
I experimented with this using different colour ways as explored through the moodboard. For example: black and blue, black and orange, black and grey.
The eyelet was considered, and a simple card option was chosen. A safety pin and blue ribbon would be used to secure the tag onto the item of clothing.
This swing tag concept was developed further, considering a booklet. This booklet would have a thin piece of translucent sheet in it (in the red shape, in keeping with the colour scheme). This would show an outline of the Missguided ‘miss’ figure, with a promotional voucher number of this, this would be used for the next transaction, as an incentive to re-order straight away.
The back of the swing tag was considered, although I was not sure whether a barcode would be necessary for an online retailer. This is something I would have to discuss with Natalie. Information which was included was the product code, the size and the price.
What next?
I must consider how I can develop this concept, moreover I must look into how I can apply this design to a tote bag / bag for life.

Creating the mood board
Next it was necessary to combine everything I had discovered through research and specifically trend analysis thus far. I used illustrator to create a 2D collage of initial ideas, including colour swatches for the four-colour combination, innovations, possible use, and fabric swatches, components such as buttons and zippers and imagery that reflect the quirky elements of the trend.
Key wording was also used to highlight the chief aspects of the trend direction. For example: storytelling, resourceful, simulated, rural tints, inventive, quirky, and abstract.
This was printed and mounted ready for presentation. I also put an annotated version of this in the sketchbook to show thought process, both in development and design.
What next?
This must be used as a starting point in the design process. I must start to implement these concepts into different templates, using the colour ways and Missguided ‘miss’ as key focal points in the design.

Creating and distributing the questionnaire's
In order to move forwards in this project, I decided that it was necessary to conduct primary research. This would enable me to make informed decisions regarding the style, quality and design of the swing tag, bag, and booklet with the target consumer in mind.
I produced three questionnaires distributed to different sets of individuals. These were all female (the predominant target market for Missguided), and all University students, therefore they were in socioeconomic group E, being at a low level of income, yet with subsidy from the state through the student loan company.
The questionnaire’s were roughly three pages in length each, and contained a combination of open ended and closed ended questions. The questions were purposely probing towards the end of the questionnaire in order to discover more personal analysis once the respondent was comfortable with the question answer process.
Photographs were used in order to gage how much a customer liked a certain item, and to establish ‘why’. Moreover, the respondents were often asked to confirm ‘why’ they chose a certain answer.
From each questionnaire, the results were collated into pie charts and were presented in the sketchbook for analysis. From these conclusions could be drawn surrounding the design and style of the POS items.
What next?
Next I must take my new found understanding and implement it, creating a mood board for the look I am trying to establish and then experimenting with my own design ideas.

Experimenting with an idea for the 'bag for life'
When creating the bag for life, I used an existing template from packaging idée which I found on the internet, I chose this to experiment with initially, because it was similar to the ‘Virgin’ bag with regards to construction.
Initially I used Illustrator to change the face of the bag to black as this was in-keeping with Missguided’s business card etc for example. I used the heart shape that Missguided use as part of their corporate identity and added a handle to the bag.
This is a quirky element which differentiates it from other tote bags. I considered ways of adding grip to the base of the bag to make it stand. This would be more costly but it is something that people really like to see on bags which they will use frequently. Therefore, if it means that people will use the bags more (consequently securing more promotion), then it may be necessary to invest in such a feature.
The brief stated that amazing arm candy should meet eco chic, therefore I looked at handbags which Missguided currently sell on their own website, and annotated these to see if there was anything I could extract from these ideas.
One thing that I did notice was the use of an adjustable handle, may it be alterable by a metal function, or simply encouraging the wearer to tie it into a knot. With further regards to totebag research I used Merchandise Mania, a magazine for business promotion. This educated me about cost per quantity, thus reminding me that I must consider feasibility with regard to Missguided as a company.
What next?
Next I will visit the shops and see if I can collect any booklets from the POS for inspiration.

Swing tag design experimentation
Next I began to consider different options for creating my own swing tag. Initially I went along with the environmentally friendly line of thought.
For my first idea I used an image of a tree, as found on Google images. This tree was then edited using illustrator effects to create a distorted surface area which was intended to reflect the coarse surface texture.
This would be printed onto a thick (200 gms) paper-card. The size was slightly larger than the average swing tag; however this was simply because of the information for inclusion on the back. The safety pin method of fastening was considered and a correspondingly-coloured green ribbon would be used and the corners would be curled to create the illusion of leafy foliage.
The next swing tag which was produced was based on the idea of the female dandy, and revolved around the fabric type ‘hessian’. It would use a rough fabric swatch of hessian and then the misguided would be stitched into this (if possible), if would be necessary to see if this is a viable idea before moving on. The string used would be medium thickness and black in correspondence with the misguided logo.
Another idea for a swing tag was inspired by research into netted tote bags, graphic imagery, and the acid candy trend. This swing tag was hexagon-shaped, and striped. The hole was not circular shaped but was star shaped – again, this is a quirky element that adds that extra special little touch.
A circular swing tag was creative using the same concept, yet this time adhering to the spot trend. These would have to be trend specific as they are very detailed and not really generic.
I then experimented with netting, acquiring a netted fabric sample from the internet and using a colour 6 trace on illustrator. A grass swing tag was also experimented with, creating an environmentally friendly statement, again this would not really work as a generic swing tag, yet the pink worked well with this.
What next?
Next I must start to implement the same techniques into experimenting with the bag for life.

Research into material and finishing effects
I began to look further into trend search, particularly focussing on shape and finishing effects – with the swing tag in mind. I came across a forecasted trend; the hive cape. This was a very interesting shape and one which could be incorporated into a swing tag design, particularly with regards to the boutique collection.
For inspiration for environmentally friendly materials for the swing tag, I discovered materials which I knew very little about, most likely due to their innovative nature. For example: grey board, paper pulp, eco-paper and carton board.
Moreover, with regards to finishing effect I discovered the following: thermography, textile concrete, sandpaper, tin, embossed texture, precision laser-cutting. Longevity is something which considers sustainability and consequently is particularly noteworthy with regards to the bag for life; this was considered frequently throughout the trends which I analysed.

Next I must begin to create my own swing tag examples basic on the secondary research I have conducted thus far.

Continued research into A/W 2010 trends
I continued to research into A/W 2010 trends, noticing that denim was particularly big for the forecasted trend season. This was good news with regards to creating a trend focussed swing tag as denim is something which always appears to be around – it is almost a timeless classic in the fashion world.
I looked at the denim trends, not only with regards to the texture and colours of the denim, yet more specifically with regards to the finishing effects. For example the textured whitewash was a forecasted favourite. This was interesting as it meant that a white tone was to be featured throughout the trend.
Furthermore the ‘unexpected gloss’ trend ` was a story which focussed on new blacks. It discussed how coatings evolved to be used as staining. Moreover, colour is layered on and scraped off in order to create new patterns and textures in: glossy, leathery blacks, oily tar-like staining, mottled smoky surfaces and matt smoked wefts.
Moreover, aged is a trend already explored through ‘emotive’ in the previous blog entry. There is a bleach contrast – this encourages imperfections in design and finish. This vintage feel is encouraged through colour, for example vintage red.
WGSN states that the trend for impure colour continues, aged weft tints and coloured, powdery coatings are prominent within the denim trend, and can be used outside this denim craze. Further research outside of the denim sector focussed on patterning which was nostalgic and highly decorative with much energy and ‘laboured beauty’.

Next I will look at shapes, textures and effects within the WGSN forecasted trends.

Research into A/W 2010 trends
I started off looking at WGSN for inspiration with regards to trends. The brief instructed that we look at Autumn/ Winter 2010 trends. The trends ‘emotive’, ‘useful’ and ‘inventive’ were consequently focussed on, both with regards to colour, texture and function.
From the emotive trend a peach colour palette was picked up on. This could be successfully used as an accent colour, or as part of a four way colour option, used alongside more neutral tones to suggest the environmentally friendly aspect.
From the useful trend, a ‘back-to-basics’ approach. This trend acknowledges that sustainable and environmentally friendly surfaces are vital and techniques remain minimal to create a modern pared-down ethos.
Ultimately, the ‘inventive’ trend caused me to consider ways of combining basic with innovative, in some ways hoping to achieve the best of both worlds. The acid candy trend was very inspiring with regards to the aforementioned peach tone. Wool and fabric swatches were used to move this trend into a direction that could be manipulated when considering the live brief.
With further regards to the emotive trend, leather fabric swatches were used to help represent my understanding of this trend. Emotive trends are ‘humble’ and time-honoured; from this statement vintage was considered as a trend. Personal craftsmanship and attention to detail is very big for Autumn Winter 2010.

Research into swing tags
After looking at tote bags, I moved on to look at swing tags. Initial research into swing tags taught me that they are vital for reflecting information both about the brand and the product, and almost uniting the two. Initial research into swing tags began using the Google search engine and Google images to locate photographs for analysis. These were collected and stuck down into the sketch book for analysis.
It was interesting to see how many different varieties of swing tags there were, each reflecting the identity of the brand. Some were overtly environmentally friendly, whereas others were very expensive and not at all environmentally conscious. The cost of the product obviously was reflected in the cost / expense of the swing tag production.
Different materials for use were acknowledged throughout research, including: Paper, transparent plastic sheet, rubber, metal, PVC, PU foam, fabric, felt and bamboo. Some of these were out of budget for misguided, but options such as fabric and plastic sheet were interesting and viable for the brand.
The type of fastening of the swing tag was also considered – would a plastic Kimble be used or a safety pin and ribbon (the latter is the most attractive yet more costly and time consuming option).
Out of the swing tags researched into the angel swing tag was the most inspiring. I began to consider that I could use this idea for Missguided, making a Missguided angel out of the brands current symbols. Because the clothes show live is at Christmas time, this could be used as a Christmas tree decoration.
The person would put it up on their tree around the time they will be considering buying party outfits, and will take it down from the tree after Christmas when they have their money to spend on New Year’s clothing.
I also visited the shops for inspiration, where possible ripping off swing tags to analyse for primary research. This successfully enabled me to appreciate textures and the tangible aspect of the tag including finishing effects.

I must start looking at trends for inspiration, particularly considering that I must create a set of trend focussed swing tag labels.

Research into tote bags
The day after receiving the brief I used the Google search engine, specifically Google images to search for photographs of existing bags for life. I kept an open mind, looking at bags which were not just fashion related, for example food bags and school tote bags.
The images were printed and put in the sketch book for analysis. There were some recurring features in that there seemed to be a prominent use of hessian, most likely because of the durability of this fabric, and also because it is very stereotypically environmentally friendly, consequently it sets off a very eco-positive message.
Fabric swatches were used to identify how such an effect / look could be recreated with Missguided in mind. When analysing the bags most of them seemed to be portrait standing, with look flimsy fabric handles.
Many were incredibly basic, most likely due to a cheap retail price, therefore required to make profit. The graphic on the bag was often kept simple, yet bold; wording and lettering was often identified.
The most ‘interactive’ element noticed were the option to customise the bag for life, for example two had plastic pouches which allowed you to place photographic images in them; very much like a pouch in a wallet yet on the outside of the bag – making a personal statement.
The bag which inspired me most with regards to design was the virgin bag. This is because it seemed to have longevity, it was very rigid, with strong handles. The based was cardboard and could fold up, making the bag easily compactable and therefore convenient for storage.
What next?
Next I will move on to look at swing tags, seeing if I can establish any parallels to ensure continuity throughout design, and generally to make progress in broadening my understanding of swing tag design and information to be provided.

Receiving the brief
We received the life brief from Missguided on the 15th January. The brief required us to create a range of POS options from the below:
1. A bag for life / tote bag, with the intention of this being sold in the website. We were instructed to think all things green meets amazing arm candy. It was necessary to take into account materials and fabrics as well as the design on the bag. Moreover, we should be innovative and think useful, re-useable and eco-chic. There was an instruction to possibly consider a foldaway bag.
2. A swingtag and woven garment label. It was required that we provided one set of trend focussed labels to be used on individual boutique collections. This could follow any or more of the AW10 trends. It was also necessary to produce one generic set of labels to be used on all Missguided clothing. The website should be used as a point of inspiration.
3. A mini brochure, in the style of one of a swing tag. This should contain information about the company. We should consider nice folding techniques to open to a brochure to display imagery / trend / blog or products in the range. The images should be chosen with regards to the forthcoming colour and fashion trends for Autumn Winter 2010.
What next?
I will use the internet as a medium for secondary research, looking at existing tote bags and analysing them with regards to their success / failure.
